INTRODUCTION
Welcome!
My name is Anousha Anjum, I am from Lahore Grammar School Defence Phase 5. This is my AS media blog!
About Me
As a kid, I was always captivated by the world of media whether it was taking pictures or watching stories unfold on screen. As growing up my passion for media helped me to work with many non-government community service organizations where I worked as media director. For me media is not just something you watch or consume but it is more a reflection of who you are and how you connect with the world are you. As it shapes identity and acts a minor of society. I think media is a very powerful tool which helps you to communicate, express yourself and understand it in a much better way. It reflect our values, thinking and challenges. This thought led me choose media studies without thinking twice. The rest of my A-level subjects tie really well with media, IT which is another favourite subject which I took because as the world of IT is growing day by day I knew I needed it to learn and develop new ideas which IT gives you and how it helps in the media as I think IT is the main source of media distribution. and then business studies which will help me in the marketing and targeting the right audience.
From a young age, I had a deep love and passion for cooking. At just the age of 9, I made my first sweet dish-pancakes. As I grew older, my interest for culinary arts only strengthened more, leading me to choose Food and Nutrition as a subject in my O Levels to expand my knowledge. This journey eventually inspired me to launch my own cooking page. I still vividly remember the day in January 2023 when I officially created my business page, encouraged by my friends and family, who acknowledged my dedication. Today, I continue to run it with aspirations of opening my own café one day. Hence, when it came to selecting a genre for my magazine, the decision was instinctive.

Research: TypographyTypography refers to the art of organizing text to make it legible, readable, and aesthetically appealing when displayed. It includes the composition, style, and decoration of text, along with its method of presentation, whether on screen or paper. It also involves choosing typefaces, point sizes, line spacing (leading), and letter spacing.
Typeface A typeface also known as font family, consists of multiple fonts that share common design elements. Each individual font in a typeface has characteristics such as style, width, weight, condensation, slant, italicization, ornamentation, and the designer's unique style.
Point Size
In typography, the point is the smallest unit of measure, which is used to define font sizes, leading and other design elements on a printed page. Over the years, its size has varied from 0.18 to 0.4 millimeters. It refers to the distance from the highest point of a letter (ascender) to the lowest point (descender) in a typeface. Today with the emergence of digital printing, the DTP (desktop publishing) point has become the standard, defined as 1/72 of an inch which is for 1 point. For example, a 12-point font means the height of the text is approximately 1/6 of an inch.

Line Lengths
It refers to the horizontal span of a line of text, measured by the number of characters, words, or physical width which is usually in inches, centimeters, or pixels. In typography ideal line length is generally between 45-75 characters per line, including spaces. Typographers adjust line length to aid legibility fit.
Line Spacing
Line spacing also refer to as leading in typography, refers to the vertical distance between lines of text in a paragraph. It is measured from the baseline of one line of text to the baseline of the next.
Letter Spacing
Letter Spacing also known as tracking in typography, refers to the adjustment of space between characters across the entire block of text. It improves the readability, especially in larger text blocks or small font sizes.
Conventions found in a magazine
The spread of a magazine consists of two corresponding pages side by side.
Here the text has been minimized and the layout has prioritizes the image.
Where as here we can see that half of the layout consists of image and half of the text.
Here we can see that images are in the center of the layout and text on both of the pages
Footer of the Magazine
The footer of a magazine contains all the important information the publisher wants to highlight ensuring that reader's don't miss out and attract their attention. They typically includes page numbers, website, issue date, edition, and logo. Additionally, for multi page articles, the footers may include the heading of the article so that readers can keep a track their progress.
The following presentation elaborates on the layout and conventions of a magazinehttps://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1PUw_P5wd_d8d1OWPM7fiBY3lz3fpeqan/edit?usp=drive_link&ouid=100704215300947928551&rtpof=true&sd=true
Cover ImageMostly the food magazines have an item of food as their main image which they usually featurein the magazine so that it is appealing to themagazines target audience.
Mast HeadThe masthead typically features bold, stylizedtypography with the vibrant colors or textures which reflect the theme of food. It is used to grab the audience attention and is usually related to the food.
Issue DateThe issue date in food/cooking magazines indicatesthe publication's release month and year, which isoften placed near the masthead so that readers can knowhow recent it is Barcode The barcode in a food magazine is usually on the front of the magazine, close to the boarder. It often also has price with next to it, to give readers help demographic.
BuzzwordsBuzzwords in food magazines are issued on the front such as "free", "exclusive", "plus" are attention grabbing terms which are used to create a sense of value. These words often highlight the special offers, advanced content according to the targeted audience so that they can engage.
2nd PageIn most food magazines, the second page is often reserved for advertisements, which are primarily related to food or kitchen products. These may include supermarkets, meat products, cookware, beverages, cutlery, canned goods, jams, oils, and home furnishings.
How fonts and conventions of a magazine are inter-related
The title and headings have either a serif fonts or display fonts to catch the reader's attention. As they are in bigger fonts size so that they are more visible as compared to the rest of the texts. Fonts are also often shown as with "BOLD" or "Italic". As we can notice in these four magazine covers they have the biggest font size on the page. The Vogue and porter are using serif fonts while Rolling Stone and The New Yorker are using display fonts. "VOGUE" has a different color the iconic masthead using Didone-style serif font to create dramatic yet elegant, to align with high-fashion, the "PORTER" has a same color and font like vogue it also uses a classic and elegant font like Didot or Bodoni because these fonts create sophistication, luxury styles to match with the magazine's brand particularly used in fashion magazines. while the other one "ROLLING STONE" has a black shadow causing them to standout it is using display fonts to make it bold, stylized and curvy letters to often associate with pop culture. "THE NEW YORKER" also uses display font to create signature masthead to create an artistic and literary vibe. Again if we look at this magazine
we can notice that the heading has the biggest font. The fonts used here are serif, sans-serif. All prominent text in this page is serif font the heading of it which is elegant, however the remaining body uses a sans-serif font to create a modern contrast with the heading and ensures it is easy to read. The point size of the fonts has differentiated in the text like to make heading, sub-headings and pull quotes prominent and the rest of the body text is the same but headings, sub-headings and pull quotes are also created differentthrough font size and font family.

Modern Day Magazines
The first modern magazine which introduced photography was The Illustrated London News in 1842 by Herbert Ingram who was an English newspaper publisher, hence the first publisher to use woodcuts which were replaced by the photographs in later decades. This was a weekly magazine which featured 16 pages of letterpress and 32 woodcuts. The photography technology advanced with the invention of collodion wet plate process in 1850's which made the medium more easy and for its use in the magazines. For example photographers like Mathew Brady in the U.S and Julia Margaret Cameron in the UK started to take photos of celebrities, events, and social life, which began to appear in magazines. By the early 20th century the increase of the photojournalism where the illustrations used to be the central in magazine started to be increasingly displaced by camera. It made the magazine more advanced and targeted more wider range of audiences as the camera's ability to take more real time pictures of events, places, and people to be use in the magazines.

The 20th century witnessed a significant growth in the magazine industry, characterized by the growth of numerous influential publications that showed societal changes, shifting social trends, rise of mass media and advancements in technology. In the starting of the century it catered mainly to educational elites by focusing on literature, politics, and culture. However, the growth of industrial printing helped in improving distribution channels and increased literacy rates made magazines more affordable and accessible to a broader audience.
By the 1920s and 1930s illustrated magazines like Life (1936-2000) became widely popular by using photojournalism to capture major global events. 21st Century The Digital Transformation
The 21st century marks a significant shift of the magazine industry by rapid technological advancements the rise of digital media and changing consumer preferences. Unlike the 20th century where printed magazines were dominated, the 21st century saw the the decline of it and the rise of first digital publications. The industry adapted to new platforms like social media, websites, mobile apps and streaming services to make it more accessible, interactive and personalized. With the increasing popularity of the internet, smartphone, print readership started to decline as readers turned to online platforms which was quicker and an easy way to access content. Digital subscriptions and e-magazines like (PDFs, Flipbooks, and website-based) became very common. The decline of the print magazines made a way for online magazines which provided consumers with the exclusive content through websites and digital platforms. The most successful online magazines included: Buzzfeed which focused on viral news, social trends and entertainment. Huffpost which was the first online news and opinion magazine. Many distinguished magazines like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal introduced subscription based paywalls for premium content. User engagement became essential, with magazines using polls, Q&A and comments to connect with readers. 21st century publications feature gifs and animation to enhance visuals. Augmented reality (AR) was used where readers can scan images to view 3D models or interactive content.
History of Magazine Genres
Illustrated Magazines
The first modern magazine which introduced photography was The Illustrated London News in 1842 by Herbert Ingram who was an English newspaper publisher, hence the first publisher to use woodcuts which were replaced by the photographs in later decades. His idea was quickly spread to other countries as France introducing L'illustration (1843-1944) and Germany with Leipziger Illustrierte Zeitung (1843) and Die Woche (1899-1940).
Women's Magazine
The women's magazines has historically reflected and influenced societal beliefs of women's roles, developing alongside cultural shifts and women's increasing demands for autonomy and self-representation. In the 18th century magazines aimed at women which reflected that they were expected participate in social and political life to robust and simulating in content However in the 19th century these magazines often became more inspired and humorless as domesticity became the ideal mirroring society's changing views on women's roles.
Literary and Scientific Magazines
They became prominent in the 19th century, the literary magazines served as platforms for fiction, poetry, essays giving opportunity to the writers to showcase their work and often became integral to literary movements. Similarly, the scientific magazine discoveries and debates accessible to wider range of audience. They are made for the educated readers so that they can also read other than their often complemented academic journals.
The following presentation is about types and categories of the magazine genres
Research: Photography
I have used Iphone 14 pro max for all my photography. Hence all research will be related to it.
Understanding Of Photography
The three sides of the exposure triangle are: ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture.
ISO
ISO assess the sensitivity of the image sensor. It manages how much light to be entered in the camera which will affect the resulting photos light or darkness. The higher the number the more sensitive your camera is to light which will allow for a faster shutter speed or narrow aperture making the photos look more grainy and vice versa. The higher ISO can be use in the low light conditions for example indoors or at night.
Examples of ISO
If we look at this example we can notice that how ISO affects the resulting image the less the ISO the dark the image will be and the high the ISO the lighter the image will be.
Another example, The photograph on the left has a lower ISO than the photo on the right thus we can see that it is less grainy.
Shutter SpeedAnother example, The photograph on the left has a lower ISO than the photo on the right thus we can see that it is less grainy.
Shutter speed is a camera setting that tells how long the shutter will remain open which will impact the amount of light being captured by camera. It can create a shorter exposure which would result in a dark image that is less blurry and vice versa for a longer exposure. Camera phones like Iphone it does not have a direct access to adjust the shutter speed as it is a default camera. However, it can be done through third parties by downloading ProCamera, or Camera+ 2 allow you to manually control shutter speed.
Examples of shutter speed
If the shutter speed is slow it can create an effect called blur motion where the object are also appear as blurred with the direction of the motion. As we can see in this picture where as if the shutter speed is fast it will help to freeze the action completely and immediately.
Aperture
I took these pictures in the natural and ambient lights for a school magazine as we can notice every picture in this have a different shutter speed, ISO, Aperture. For the first left one it is ISO:1000, Aperture: f1.78, Shutter Speed: 1/25s, and Focal Length: 24mm. The top right one has ISO:64, Shutter Speed: 1/40s, Aperture: f1.78, and Focal Length: 35mm. The third picture has ISO: 800, Shutter Speed: 1/14s, Aperture: f2.8, and Focal Length:77mm. The last photograph have ISO: 200, Shutter Speed: 1/100s, Aperture: f1.78, and Focal Length: 24mm. All these pictures were taken to show the shadows and how all of these affect the resulting photograph.
A phone's camera aperture is the lens opening that adjusts the amount of light hitting entering the sensor. It is measured in f-stops. For example on Iphone 14 pro max it is f/1.78. If it is a larger aperture (lower f-number) the image will be brighter as it will allow more light to reach the sensor where as if it is a lower aperture (higher f-number) then the image will be darker as it limits the amount of light to reach the sensor. As it have a limited depth of field which means that the foreground may be sharp but the background will be blurry also known as the "bokeh" effect. It can be changed after taking the photograph. The wider aperture means that more light can pass through which helps a smartphone in performing better in low lights.
Examples of Aperture
If we look at these photographs we can see that the first photograph has a lower aperture which has shallow depth of field and the background is blurry and the main sunflower is sharp and having a bokeh effect on the other hand it has a higher aperture the background of the image can also be seen more in focus visible alongside the sunflower hence a higher depth of field.
Classroom light assignment
In this assignment, I have used natural light and ambient lights to show shadows of the subject and hence how to take a clear photograph.

Photo Editing Software
These software packages are used to enhance the photographs, to change the background, editing, add effects, add/remove the elements you want to. Once the project is complete it is transformed into one single new image.
For my photo shoots, I have used different color chart papers as my background because my subjects were not that big so I did not need the full size backdrop. All of my pictures were taken in the natural light.

RGB VS CMYK
Both of them are two primary color models used in printing and design. RGB is mainly used for digital displays such as computer monitors, televisions and smartphones. Whereas, CMYK is used for printing processes, including materials like business cards, brochures and poster cards. An additive process where combining red, green and blue light at full intensity produces white light. In CMYK, a subtractive method where combining cyan, magenta, and yellow inks absorb light which result in darker colors black ink referred as 'k' is added so a deeper blacker and clear details. RGB has broader spectrum of vibrant colors which make it perfect for digital media but CMYK has a limited color compared to RGB which leads to less vibrant colors in print. To get accurate colors in CMYK may require additional ink cartridges and specialized techniques which leads to increased costs in printing. The appearance of RGB colors can vary across different devices due to variations in display technologies and calibrations. This means that color which is viewed on one screen might be different on another.
Resolution
Resolution is the measure of pixels in the display which are usually expressed in measurements of width x height. It tells the level of detail an image holds which is typical in pixels per inch (PPI) or dots per inch (DPI). Higher resolution tells more details and sharper images. For print media like posters, magazines and flyers resolution is important. The standard for it is 300 DPI for high quality prints. When images are preparing for print it is important to convert them to CMYK color model as it is linked to the inks used in printing. 72 DPI resolution is used in on screen media. The concept of this is that monitors emit light and paper absorb light. Image files which have higher resolution will also have a more file size as the data they contain is more.
Target Audience
To get an idea of the target audience of my magazine. I looked at the popular magazines with a similar theme. After looking at the "Forbes", "Entrepreneur", "Foreign Affairs", "Fortune", "Success". I noticed a similar audience in them.
Most of the readers were between the ages 25 and 60 with the mindset of innovation, leadership, investors, politics.
To confirm by target audience's interests, I made a questionnaire form, analyze my results and then later compared them with my research above.
Questionnaire Form
According to these results, people above 18 and willing to spend $10-$50 on a monthly food magazine. This budget indicates that they are financially stable and able to buy and make use of expensive magazine like "The Dessert Diaries". Because most of them do look at the content page before buying it it shows that they are interested the first time they open up a magazine. Mostly people also opted for monthly subscription, again showing their interest and also for the recipes they both which tells that they are interested to try new food items.
Thus because of these results now my magazine target audience shall be:
Individuals between the age of 18 or above
Individuals with an interest in food coupons
Financially stable individuals

Planning and Production
Genre chosen: Food, sub-genre; desserts
Inspiration
Cover Page
Choosing the type of layout and mise en scene
For my magazine cover page, I wanted my subject to be on center of the frame to maximize the prominence. Also I decided to add some colorful sprinkles on top of my Waffles to create a color variation.
Before finalizing the layout of my cover page, I did research on different types of food magazine covers and their targeted audience and then I started my own analysis.
Below are different food magazines and briefs about them
Bon appetit is a leading food magazine which focuses on global culture, culinary trends and story telling. Their cover designs are notable for their vibrant and food enticing photography. It represents a rich blend of recipes and cater to both casual and seasoned food enthusiasts.
This American magazine delves into the world of gastronomy, which focuses on innovative recipes, wine pairings and dining experiences. The cover pages are renowned for their enticing visuals. It has many tested recipes ranging from quick weeknight dinners to elaborate dishes suitable for special occasions.
A global cuisines culinary traditional and art of cooking magazine, providing with the extensive collection of authentic recipes categorized by ingredient, course and cuisine. It shows the smart readable content, showing simple yet elegant cover photos which looks really flavorful and advanced recipes.
My Analysis
After looking at these magazines layouts, I decided not to follow the typical food magazine hence first I kept the background of a light color but dark from my object for a contrast to give it an elegant theme and a dark color text so that they stand out. Instead of filling the cover page with text, and buzzwords I decided to keep it simple and leave it empty so that it is easy for reader to read and understand and the theme of elegance remains.
How I chose the layout
As for the layout I decided to have a large mast head with a unique font from the rest of the page below on the right hand side will be the month of issue and on the left side will be my first buzzword will come and then an attractive cover image, and bar code then on the bottom left side my anothercoverline will come , on middle my last cover line and with it my bar code to give my magazine an expensive and elegant look.
Behind the scenes
I tried taking the pictures of my object with different backgrounds to experiment and see which one will look more good and in which my object is more prominent as it will be the center of my cover magazine.
Rejected Photos
Chosen Photograph
This is a Birds eye shot of confetti crunch waffles. I selected this picture because it beautifully captures the elegance of simplicity while adding a touch of colorful toppings. The soft pastel background enhances its visual appeal, I did not chose the yellow or peach color background ones because yellow was giving a very bright and harsh look as I wanted to give it a soft and minimal touch so I chose this. Also the fork I placed was to give a sense of composition and balance making the image not just about food but also give it an artistic look. The contrast between the golden-brown waffles and vibrant sprinkles to add a dynamic element and make it visual. This picture is a mixture of creativity, elegance, and indulgence in one frame. Another reason for choosing this picture that there is enough space above and around it for a masthead, buzzwords and barcode. As by just adding these information my page won't look empty as my dessert also occupies most of the center of the image and does not leave space for more texts to be added nor do I plan to insert any text either.

The Process
Content Page
Choosing the type of layout
Analysis
If we look at the first two content pages they have 5 images related to the magazine. On the other hand the 3rd content page have the one primary image relate to the magazine. Page numbers are also stated before the article they are referring to and headings have been used to catch reader's attention All three have the plain white color background and have the heading "Contents".
Layout Plan
This time I went along the conventions of a food magazine content page. I decided to add bright contrasting pictures of desserts, headings. Hence I kept it very simple to give it an expensive and elegant touch.
Chosen Photographs
These four photos show chocolate drizzle cheesecake, red velvet swirl cake, nutella lava cookies and brownie bites. I chose these four photos because I wanted to give an light and elegant look with the light color background. The dripping of the chocolate looks really mouthwatering so when consumers will open the content page they will see this and will be eager to buy the magazine and try out this recipe that is why I chose this picture. All these picture symbolizes texture either in the form of dessert of background. The nutella filled cookies are perfect for the chocolate lovers as it is a double chocolate cookies with gooey and chocolate chips addition. I chose these pictures so that I can tell the consumer when they open the content page that this magazine is not just for the chocolate lovers but also for those who does not like not chocolate, they also have other options to try without any guilt.

Analysis and Layout Plan
All three of double page spreads have an exclusive topic with them, which is stretched out to the next page. My idea is to tell the reader a recipe of a dessert. To fill out the two pages I shall give the ingredients and optional on the first page and on the second corresponding page shall give instructions and the picture will be spread over two pages to give them a photograph of expected product.

Final Double Spread Page
I chose this font because it is bold, making the title stand out on the page. This will thus immediately catch reader's attention and will tell the importance of the recipe. As it is clear font it will ensure that readers can quickly identify the recipe name and will not have to strain their eyes. I made sure that the heading is larger and bolder than the rest of text to create a natural reading flow hence readers will first notice the recipe name and then proceed to ingredients and instructions. I gave it a touch of stylish and readable. I tried to align it with my theme of elegance and minimalistic. The double page spread has been divided into two pages. The page on the left contains the heading, ingredients, optional things which can be added and few pictures of the donuts and the sprinkles, while the page on the right has directions of how to make them and instructions with the donut pictures and colorful sprinkles added, and the page number on the left bottom side of the page.
